The Slope Is Your Friend
Mount Washington is built on hillsides, and for egress work, hills are helpful. On the downhill side of the house, the grade drops away — which can put the basement window close to grade level, meaning a shallow well, less digging, and sometimes the 5.0-square-foot grade-level allowance instead of 5.7. We read the slope on every visit and site the window where gravity helps.
Stone Houses, Careful Cutting
The neighborhood's older stone houses need the careful approach — thick irregular walls, slow cutting, proper support above the opening. The newer construction on the hills is typically poured or block, faster work. Either way, the free visit identifies the wall and we cut it right.
Drainage Downhill
Slopes move water, and Mount Washington moves a lot of it in a storm. Well drainage here ties into the downhill flow — we grade and drain so the well sheds water with the slope instead of fighting it. A well at the bottom of a hill without drainage is a catch basin; with drainage, it is a non-issue.
