The Lid That Does Three Jobs

A window well cover looks simple — a clear lid over the hole. It does three jobs that matter. First, safety: an open well is a pit in your yard. Kids, pets, and distracted adults fall into uncovered wells every year, and a deep well with a ladder is still a five-foot drop onto gravel. Second, debris: without a cover, the well collects every leaf, branch, and tennis ball in the neighborhood, and you are down there scooping it out twice a year. Third, water: a cover sheds the direct rainfall that would otherwise pour straight into the well during a Baltimore thunderstorm.

The right cover does all three while still letting light through to the basement window. Clear polycarbonate is the standard — tough, light, and it keeps the basement bright.

What Makes a Good Cover

Fit is everything. A cover that does not match the well leaves gaps — and gaps are where leaves, mice, and little fingers go. We measure your exact well and fit the cover to it, not to a generic size. The cover should slope slightly so rain runs off away from the house, sit high enough to clear the window's top, and lift off easily from inside — because in an emergency, the person climbing out needs to push it up and off without a fight. We test that motion with you during the walkthrough.

Strength matters too. A cover should hold the weight of a person stepping on it — because someone will step on it. Ours are rated for foot traffic, so a misstep is an embarrassment, not an emergency.

Covers and Drainage Work Together

A cover is not a substitute for drainage. It sheds direct rain, but groundwater and surface runoff still reach the well — that is what the gravel base and drain line are for. Think of it as a team: the cover handles the sky, the drainage handles the ground. Every well we build gets both.

Replacing a Broken or Missing Cover

Already have a well with a cracked, cloudy, or missing cover? We replace covers on existing wells — measure, fit, and set. A cloudy old cover can cut the basement's daylight in half; a fresh clear one brings it back. If the well itself is failing — rusted, caved, holding water — see window well installation instead.

Cover Styles Compared

Not all covers are the same. Here is the honest breakdown of what is out there.

Flat polycarbonate covers are the standard: a clear, slightly sloped sheet fitted to the well. They shed rain, hold foot traffic, and keep the basement bright. Most of our installs get these. They are the best value — simple, tough, and effective.

Dome covers arch over the well, giving extra clearance for windows that crank outward and shedding leaves a little better — debris slides off the curve. They cost more and stand taller above grade, which some homeowners dislike. Worth it when the window needs the headroom.

Atrium covers are the premium option: taller, often with vents, designed to maximize light and air while keeping everything out. They suit deep wells on high-end finishes. They are also the most expensive — justified when the basement is a primary living space, overkill for a storage cellar.

Metal grates keep people and pets out and let rain straight through — which means they do nothing for water or leaves. We do not recommend them as primary covers, though they work as a security layer under a polycarbonate cover in rare cases.

What We Recommend

For most Baltimore wells: a flat polycarbonate cover, fitted to the exact well, rated for foot traffic, sloped to shed rain away from the house. It does the three jobs — safety, debris, water — at the fairest price. Dome when the window swing needs clearance. Atrium when the basement is finished living space and the budget allows.

Whatever the style, three rules hold: it must fit with no gaps, it must lift off easily from inside, and it must be strong enough to stand on. We verify all three at the walkthrough — including stepping on it, so you see the strength yourself.

How It Works: Our Process

Step 1 — Free visit and measure. We measure your exact well — length, width, height above grade — and check the window's swing and the ladder position.

Step 2 — Written estimate. Cover style, fit, and any well repairs needed first — itemized.

Step 3 — Fit day. The cover is cut to your well's dimensions, set with the proper slope, and secured against wind lift while remaining easy to remove from inside.

Step 4 — Safety check. We test the inside lift-off with you, confirm the fit has no gaps, and step on it to prove the weight rating.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will a cover block light to the basement?

Not a clear one. Polycarbonate covers are transparent — the basement stays bright. A cloudy old cover is the thing that blocks light, which is a good reason to replace it.

Can someone still get out through the cover in an emergency?

Yes. The cover lifts off from inside with an easy push — no latches, no tools. We test the motion with you during the walkthrough.

Will the cover hold my weight if I step on it?

The covers we install are rated for foot traffic. A misstep should be an embarrassment, not an emergency.

Do covers keep all water out?

They shed direct rain, which is a big share of well water. Groundwater and runoff still need the well's drainage system — covers and drainage work as a team.

Can you fit a cover on my existing well?

In most cases, yes. We measure the exact well and fit the cover to it. If the well is rusted or caved, we will recommend rebuilding it first.
